When working on Dynamite's graphic novel adaption of Grave Surprise for New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris (creator of the True Blood series), I only had the dust jacket, cover, and a handful of pages to work with, so I wanted to get across as much mood and atmosphere as possible for the series about her medium character, Harper Connelly. To accomplish this, I focused heavily on shadow and the dead tree theme from artist Ilias Kyriazis' cover. For under the dust jacket, I went with a textured, leatherette feel with a de-bossed, deep red foil that would feel more familiar to the non-traditional comic book readers we were hoping to bring in with this title.
